BYO Book Club

The Second Tuesday of every month, The Backstairs is introducing its BYO Book Club — a monthly gathering for people who love books, in all their forms. There’s no assigned reading and no expectations. Bring the book you’re reading. Or the one you keep meaning to start. Or the one you can’t stop talking about.

We’ll share what’s on our shelves, swap recommendations, and enjoy good conversation in good company.

Let’s gather, sip something good, and talk books — no rules, no pressure, just readers being readers.

Backstairs Unplugged: An Intimate Listening Room Experience
Featuring Jess O’Brien & Alex Underwood

Join us for the inaugural Backstairs Unplugged, a new listening-room series designed for music lovers who want to truly hear the songs and the stories behind them. For this special first event, The Backstairs will be transformed into an intimate space where the focus is simple: great songwriting, honest performances, and a shared experience.

Vermont-based singer-songwriter Jess O’Brien brings a sound rooted in folk, country, and blues, delivered with warmth and emotional depth. Frequent collaborator Paul Miller describes her voice as “expressive and soulful, revealing a tender heart,” and her songs carry that same quiet power.

Sharing the evening is Alex Underwood, a local country singer-songwriter whose music reflects a lived life—stories of love, loss, and resilience. Drawing inspiration from traditional country troubadours and artists like Townes Van Zandt, Dwight Yoakam, and Chris Stapleton, Alex’s songs feel both timeless and deeply personal.

Friday, January 23
Doors open at 6:00 PM, show starts at 6:30 PM
$20 advance / $25 at the door

This is a limited-capacity event to preserve the listening-room atmosphere. Advance tickets are strongly recommended.

The Georgetown Chimes @ The Backstairs

Harry’s Hardware is proud to host The Georgetown Chimes at our Backstairs event space on Saturday, January 17 at 4pm for an unforgettable afternoon of a cappella music.

This is not your average singing group. With 18 voices on stage — including 9 “Actives” bringing high energy and rich harmonies throughout the set — The Chimes create a sound that’s bold, surprising, and completely captivating.

Founded in 1946, The Chimes are Georgetown University’s oldest a cappella group, known for singing everything from barbershop classics to modern pop. Over the decades, they’ve released more than two dozen albums, performed for presidents from Truman to Obama, and shared their music with audiences around the world — from Dublin and Puerto Rico to New York City, Chicago, and beyond.

Now, they’re bringing that magic to The Backstairs for an intimate performance you won’t want to miss. Come cozy up, grab a drink, and experience a cappella like you’ve never heard it before.

Dana Robinson - Acoustic concert

Dana Robinson - Acoustic concert

Known around town as the guy that organizes concerts and festivals in Cabot, Dana is taking the rare opportunity to book a show for himself.

In 2015, after a 25-year career of performing across the US and UK, Dana settled in Cabot to get off the road and put down roots. Dana's songwriting continued, however. In 2019, Dana released The Town That Music Saved, which earned the "Best Vermont Album of the Year" by The Times-Argus. Dana's upcoming release, Sound of the Word is part meditation on the beauty of our local landscape, and part thought-provoking look at the state of the world.

Due for release in January, Sound of the Word has been four years in the making. Join us for a sneak peak at Dana's new cycle of songs and hear the stories behind the compositions. From performing at Carnegie Hall to providing music for Ken Burns’ documentaries, Dana's rich voice and landscape-inspired lyrics connect the listener to the world around us.

Seating is limited. To purchase tickets in advance, visit: https://www.cabotarts.org/dana-robinson

Dana's website: https://www.robinsongs.com

Seven Days writes, “Dana is a master storyteller, spinning his yarns with the precise skill of an artisan loom weaver."

“Rural America explored with elegant simplicity. Their music and cleanly poetic songwriting bring to mind the great folksingers of our times.” Asheville Citizen-Times
